How to Swim Without a Pool
Unless you’re one of the lucky few with a backyard pool, right now at least, nobody is doing much in the way of swimming as all the pools, lakes, and beaches are currently closed. It’s times like these that creativity is king.
There is a dry-land training tool that serious swimmers have used for ages, but it isn’t something most of the public or your average Sunday morning swimmer or aquafit regular know about. This tool is called “swim cordz” or dry-land swimming bungees. When used in a certain way they can mimic the upper body and cardiovascular component of swimming… but on land.
Who are they the ideal workout tool for?
- Anyone looking to work on cardio at home but is limited to the amount of lower body exercise they can do (knee injury, muscle strain, ankle sprain, hip injury etc)
- If you want to work on cardio but are confined to your house or backyard.
- If you want to work on cardio but don’t have access or the ability to ride a bike or run.
- Swimmers wanting to work on their stroke and technique
- Swimmers wanting to get stronger throughout their entire stroke
- Swimmers rehabbing a lower body or shoulder injury (check with your physio before commencing any new activity)
- Anyone on a budget wanting to get a sweat on!
What do I need?
- Tubing – you can use therabands which you can buy from Metrotown Orthopedic and Sports Physiotherapy (604-430-3066)
- … that is pretty much it!
- If you want to make it fancier add in swim paddles (simply tie tubing to your own swim paddles) or grab a easy-to-use kit like the one below that can be looped into any door frame or hooked up to a fence etc.
